Retrospective : Chenoa Morrison

So, it's time for me to reflect on my time here at PrairieView and discuss where I am now.

Well to start off, I didn't know anything about my camera, or editing, or anything really. I shot everything in the automatic modes and probably did way too much over editing because I just really had no idea what I was doing. I pretended like I did but I didn't. I would get some random gems here and there and that always made me really happy, but I couldn't figure out how to do that more consistently.

(This was shot in 2007 and is still one of my favourites.)

When school started we jumped right into everything. It was a lot to take in. We learned how to use our cameras properly, like what happens at certain apertures and shutter speeds and ISOs, etc. We learned how to edit properly in Lightroom, and how to make interesting compositions in our photographs.

I felt almost immediately after we'd really gotten to know our cameras and whatnot that I had improved quite a bit. A friend and I would make several trips to the zoo each year and most of the time I'd get only a couple good shots. When we went during this initial learning process I ended up with tons of good photos that I loved, and I could tell already things were going well. I was very excited.

As school progresses more we expand on those initial essential skills we learned at the beginning of the year. We're learning how to take better and more interesting photos all around.

We're learning how to take better portraits and how to read people better.

And we're learning and attempting to master studio lighting, which I think is one of the things I'm most excited about.

Even still, with everything being thrown at us, I still feel and know I have a long way to go before I really feel confident in my skills. I've come a long way already but there's still so much to learn and perfect. And I'm really excited for that.
